A charging session is the period during which an electric vehicle (EV) is connected to a charging station and actively receiving energy. A session begins when the vehicle is authenticated and charging starts, and it ends when the vehicle is unplugged, the charging is stopped, or the battery reaches the desired state of charge (SoC).
During a charging session, key information is recorded, including start and end time, energy delivered (kWh), charging duration, applied tariff, cost, charger ID, and user details. This data is essential for billing, revenue reconciliation, reporting, performance tracking, and operational analysis by Charge Point Operators (CPOs) and eMobility Service Providers (eMSPs).
Efficient management of charging sessions also supports network optimization, ensuring that chargers are available when needed, preventing overloading, and improving overall user experience. Advanced systems may provide real-time monitoring, fault detection, and session analytics, enabling CPOs to optimize charging infrastructure, implement dynamic pricing, and track energy consumption trends across locations.
By accurately tracking and managing charging sessions, EV operators can ensure transparent billing, reliable service, better energy efficiency, and improved operational performance, making it a critical component of the EV charging ecosystem.
