A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit of energy that measures how much electricity is used or delivered over time. In EV charging, it represents the total amount of energy that goes into the vehicle’s battery during a charging session.
It is also the basis for calculating charging costs. The total cost of charging is usually determined by multiplying the number of kWh consumed by the price per kWh set by the electricity provider or charging operator.
In simple terms, if kilowatts (kW) measure how fast energy is delivered, kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure how much energy is delivered. For example, a charger may deliver energy at a certain kW rate, but the kWh tells you the total energy added to the battery over the entire charging duration.
