OCPI (Open Charge Point Interface)

OCPI (Open Charge Point Interface) is an open communication protocol that enables seamless roaming and interoperability between different EV charging networks. It connects Charge Point Operators (CPOs) with e-Mobility Service Providers (eMSPs), allowing them to exchange information and provide a unified charging experience to EV drivers across multiple networks.

With OCPI, drivers can use a single app, RFID card, or account to access charging stations operated by different providers. The protocol handles essential functions such as user authentication, session management, real-time charger availability, pricing, and billing. When a driver plugs into a charger on a roaming partner’s network, OCPI ensures that their credentials are verified and the charging session is recorded and billed accurately by their primary provider.

A key strength of OCPI is its ability to standardize communication between networks. It enables real-time data exchange, ensuring that information like charger status, energy usage, and tariffs is consistently shared. This helps maintain transparency and allows users to make informed decisions about where and when to charge.

For operators, OCPI opens up new business opportunities by expanding their reach beyond their own network. Through roaming partnerships, they can make their charging stations accessible to a wider user base, increasing utilization and potential revenue. It also simplifies settlement processes by enabling automated billing reconciliation between networks.

OCPI supports a wide range of functionalities, including dynamic tariff updates, session tracking, reservation handling, and real-time notifications. These features contribute to a smoother and more reliable experience for both drivers and operators.

Overall, OCPI plays a crucial role in building a connected EV charging ecosystem by enabling cross-network access, improving user convenience, and supporting scalable growth of charging infrastructure.
