EV Terminology
Plug & Charge
Plug & Charge is a convenient EV charging technology that allows a vehicle to automatically authenticate and start charging as soon as it is connected to a compatible charger, without the need for cards, apps, or manual payment steps. The communication between the vehicle and the charging station securely identifies the user and initiates billing in the background.
This is made possible through secure digital certificates stored in the vehicle and the charging system. When the EV is plugged in, the charger and the car exchange encrypted information to verify identity, authorize the session, and link it to a payment method associated with the user’s account.
Plug & Charge simplifies the charging experience by removing the need for multiple authentication methods such as RFID cards or mobile apps. It makes the process faster, more seamless, and user-friendly, especially in high-traffic or public charging environments.
For drivers, it offers a true “plug and go” experience, just connect the cable and charging begins automatically. For operators, it ensures secure, accurate billing while reducing dependency on manual authentication systems.
This technology also enhances interoperability and supports roaming across networks, provided both the vehicle and charging infrastructure support standardized communication protocols like those defined by industry frameworks.
Overall, Plug & Charge improves convenience, security, and efficiency, making EV charging as simple as plugging in and walking away.
